A Brief History of Our Company

The Wohner Family has owned and operated business since 1909 and have been perfecting our art in fine wood craftsmanship and design. Our founding father, Ferenc Wohner established the business in Budafok, Hungary outside the castle hill of Budapest. His factory employed many townspeople and was considered high tech for the time as he had the latest in belt drive equipment powered by one electric motor.

The communists eventually took over the country and the business from the family. Leaving Ferenc's son John little hope for providing for his young family. Escaping with only the clothes on their back they were able to make their way to America as refugees.

With hard work and faith, John was able to establish a new life in New York. First working at the Bronstein Carving Company, John acquired many carving patterns as that shop closed. John's son Robert, (third Generation), who was a talented foundry pattern maker, joined with his father to start the current Wohners and purchased the Englewood building in 1960.

Robert built the business into a very successful woodworking shop with a focus on ornate carved commissions. He employed skilled artists from throughout Europe and America to produce works for the finest homes. Sadly a fire in the shop destroyed priceless models and works in 1980. He would have to start fresh again. Seeing that many shops did not have the access to decorative ornamentation, Robert started to provide carving services for other woodworkers. With his 3 son's, John, Michael and Robert they started to stock an inventory of designs.

Now, John (the fourth generation), leads the business with a desire to honor the legacy of the past by producing quality items that can be passed on for generations.

Over four generations we built our reputation through hand carved reproductions of classical pieces. Over the years we have produced an enormous array of works from the simple to very ornate masterpieces meant for kings. Paneled rooms, libraries, mantelpieces, furniture, custom doors, were all painstakingly designed and built in house.

Today, we bring these experiences and know-how to each and every product. Armed with these formidable skills we can show you a way to add elegance to your next project, whether your looking for the ornate or simply a classic 'touch'
